Soups — Souper!

Soup is the Great Equalizer. A cup of broth, a few vegetables, perhaps some meat, sits as well in a mug on my kitchen table as it does in a porcelain bowl on a king’s table. It smells good on the stove and warms the stomach and the soul. Soup is a good friend.

Now You Know

  • Early archaeological evidence suggests that our ancestors were eating soup in 6000 B.C.E. The soup was hippopotamus! (It must be true. I read it on the web.)
  • Consommé, or clear broth, was created by a chef who knew what side his bread was buttered on. The chef’s king was so in love with himself he wanted to see his reflection in his soup.
  • “Of soup and love, the first is the best.”—an old Spanish proverb. (Must have been a very old Spaniard.)
